Cricket and the English summer, Lords and the birth of this great game..........


Rubbish........I was somewhat nonplussed when I came across this poster.

Early years

One of the many theories about the origin of cricket is that France could be a possible birthplace of the game. A mention of a bat and ball game called "criquet" in a village of the Pas-de-Calais occurs in a French manuscript of 1478, and the word "criquet" is an old French word meaning "post" or "wicket"^[3]. However, it is equally possible that this could be an early variant of croquet. It must be remembered that most of France during the 14th and 15th centuries was under English occupation in the Hundred Years War and so any cricket references in France at this time are probably due to the game having been introduced to France by the English occupiers ^[4].

Horace Walpole, son of former British Prime Minister Robert Walpole mentioned seeing cricket in Paris in 1766.^[3]

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) were due to make the first ever international cricket tour of France, in 1789, however this was cancelled due to theFrench Revolution. This match was finally played in 1989, as part of the bicentennial celebrations of the revolution, with France beating the MCC by 7 wickets. ^[5]

The first documented match took place in the Bois de Boulogne between Paris Cricket Club and Warwickshire Knickerbockers in 1864. Paris Cricket Club published a book explaining the game the following year ^[3].

Deux Jours pour la Terre - Port Argeles
Bar Vicens Soirée - St Jean Pla des Corts

Deux Jours pout La Terre, Port Argeles,May 15th - 16th 9:00-18:00

Les Enfants de la Mer are organising two days of entertainment, information and produce on the theme of Ecological Sustainability at Port Argeles.

On the Saturday there are talks and "animations" on biodiversity, including childrens activities and the WWF school.

On the Sunday there is a Local Producers' Market and a gourmet lunch organised by restaurant Le Clos des Lys. Also a workshop on edible plants and a Discovery Farm with over 300 animals, rare breeds and endagered species. We will be exhibiting at the Producers Market and you'll be able to buy our wines to accompany the lunch at normal retail prices.

It is situated in the market place and southern end of the promenade off Avenue du Grau, between Port Argeles and Argeles Plage.

Shhh - Don't tell anyone

Make sure that you don't tell anyone about this film, staring Omar Sherrif, set in the beautiful surroundings of the Roussillon.

Marie is a young woman without a past or future.  Having been released from prison, she heads for the south of France, hoping to find seasonal work there.  It is here that she meets Baptiste, an old man who was once a cycling champion but who now occupies himself as a painter.  The two become close friends, thanks to their common interest in art.  It is through Baptiste that Marie discovers her true identity, the identity she thought she had lost...

Managed to get away from the Volcanic ash for a couple of days to help Tom and Chris take the Yacht from Empurius to Barcelona. 
The three intrepid explorers set off at a leisurely pace, as we slipped out of the port al was good and calm for the first half an hour, until we were well and truly in the middle of the Bay of Rosas. If anyone offers you a trip across this bay, the day after a Tramontana. I think I would have felt better in a dish washer.


Leaving the detail out, we finally made it out of the bay, past Franco's folly and on down the coast towards St Feliu de Guixols,a pretty little port where we were able to use the yacht club facilities to shower and warm up, followed by tapas and wine in a pleasant restaurant.


Early to bed means early to rise, which we also managed.


We set off the next morning in altogether far better weather, there was a soft breeze and the sun was shining. We had to motor for a good part of the day as we had a dead line to reach Barcelona by mid afternoon but as the wind picked up to force 4, we could not resist and has a few hours excellent sailing. Now this is what it as all about.


Tom's boat is a Bavaria 38 and we spent the day following another boat which seemed to be on the same course. We were delighted to find out that it was a 53 and we had managed to keep up with it all day.


On entering the port of Barcelona, we were ready for a rest and to make our onward journey, only to be pulled over by the Gardia Civil. When you are called over be gun toting spanish guys, it is generally a good idea to do as they say. Anyway nothing found papers in order and no strip search (much to Chris's disappointment) we made it into harbour, after a great couple of days on the ocean waves.
