If you like walking, then this is a great place to climb. One side is easy but the other is quite challenging. The views from the top are breath taking.
Well worth a visit but you might want to steer clear on 21/12/12
THERE are now more journalists than inhabitants in Bugarach, Aude, the village predicted to be the only place that will be spared in tomorrow’s apocalypse.
In all, 254 journalists from all over the world have been accredited to cover the village of 200 inhabitants in the run-up to December 21, the date when internet-fuelled New Age rumours claim the world will end. The date is said to correspond to the end of the current era in the ancient Mayan calendar.
There are also around 100 gendarmes patrolling the streets and blocking off the mountain top of the Pic de Bugarach which is a focus of interest. Some believers claim there is an alien spacecraft under it. Police potholers have been checking out caves under it which will also be kept under guard.
Major security measures are in place around a perimeter including three other villages, with road checkpoints, a security headquarters, a team of counsellors and a helicopter evacuation point. Various restrictions have been ordered, including on hunting, hiking, holding “giant apéros”, camping, and parking along roads.
However, Le Figaro said this excitement is probably “for nothing” because so far hardly anyone else has turned up.
It said the expected floods of people have not materialised though a handful of “cranks” who have made the trip are thrilled to be receiving so much attention from the film crews on Bugarach’s streets.
One man, calling himself “Oriana”, told journalists the coming apocalypse would not be “the end of the world”, but would be “a revelation, an internal alchemy that will descend into each of our bodies – like 1,000 orgasms in one go.”
It remains to be seen if more people arrive on the day itself.

READERS with small businesses run under the auto-entrepreneur
regime have told us how they have been receiving bills for the business tax CFE
- these should not be paid.
As we report in the December edition of Connexion, people on this
simple business system, launched in 2009, are exempt again from the cotisation
foncière des entreprises (CFE) this year. This is the new tax that has replaced
the taxe professionnelle and negotiations are continuing as to whether
auto-entrepreneurs should pay it. More on this story...

Great little rental
Its all in the name - La Cachette - Hidden in the quiet back lanes of Ceret, this would make a great rental to try out the area, find a little winter sun..........
A very charming traditional catalan L shaped cottage enjoying lovely views of the hills from both sides of the house.
The garage is on street level, next to it is a door which leads up covered steps onto a large sunny garden terrace above the garage, fencing and hedging give complete privacy whilst still allowing views of Mt Canigou and the Fontfrede . There is a wooden table and bench- seat to enjoy winter sunshine. Outside toilet access from the terrace.
The front door is accessed from this terrace, leading into a cosy open plan lounge/dining room with TV point and phone line. French doors on the other side of the lounge lead to a quaint courtyard beyond, with a beautiful view of the hills and total privacy.
Good size kitchen with breakfast table, large fridge, gas oven, microwave above it. Double sink, electric hob. It is a delightfully bright kitchen and has windows either side of the room and a glass door leading onto the same courtyard.
Half the courtyard is paved and the other half is raised and currently covered with river stones for ease of maintenance but could be used to grow flowers or vegetables if wished. Round the corner of the building and out of sight is the sunny laundry drying area.
Both the front terrace and back courtyard are ideal for bbqs.
From the front terrace is a second door leading into a small newly double glazed sunlounge with windows that open wide for summer. This has direct access to the new staircase to the first floor and to the utility end of the kitchen with washing machine and worktops etc. Read More......

Buying property in France
Important changes to inheritance laws - find out more
The European parliament has passed a regulation which allows expats in France to dictate in a will that they want the law of the state of their nationality to apply to their estate and not French inheritance law. This, in effect, means Britons in particular can leave their estate to whoever they wish and not be bound by strict inheritance rules as at present. It is expected to be operational from 2015.
This is an important issue. To find more details see The Connexion, April edition, which is on sale now in newsagents and supermarkets across France. Click here to find a stockist near you or download a copy here. The cost is €3.25.

The Mediterranean in February
One of the great things about being in the Pyrenees Orientales during the winter is that, yes we do have cold weather and yes it does snow occasionally but then out of the blue you get a few days of blissful sunshine and temperatures of over 20 degrees. If you live near the Mediterranean then where else to go but the beach, though I would council against swimming!

Lovely lunch and walk on the beach,
Thanks Nick and Chris
